Frequently asked questions about cat affection
How can I tell if my cat really loves me?
Signs of feline love are often subtle: the slow blink, rubbing against you (scent marking), purring in your presence, following you, or sleeping near you. A cat that shows you their belly is giving you absolute trust. Feline love rarely manifests in showy gestures — it's read in everyday small things.
My cat never purrs — does that mean they don't love me?
No. Purring is an individual behaviour — some cats purr rarely or not at all, regardless of their affection. Look for other signals: lying near you, half-closed eyes when looking at you, following you around. The absence of purring doesn't mean the absence of love.
Why does my cat slow-blink at me?
The slow blink is the feline equivalent of a warm smile. It's one of the clearest affection signals a cat can send. You can respond in kind: gently blink back, and they'll understand you're returning the trust signal.
My cat gently bites me — is that a sign of love?
Yes, light bites with no aggressive intent (love bites) are a sign of affection and play. However, if the bite is accompanied by flattened ears and a twitching tail, that's an irritation signal — stop stimulating.
